From Sydney Harbour to Gold Coast: The Best Places to Visit in Australia

Every year, approximately 10 million tourists visit Australia.

And, even though Australia isn’t a convenient destination for many of us, once you get there, you’ll see why so many people make the trek.

Since Australia is so far out of the way, you’ll definitely want to make sure you make the most of your time there, as who knows when you’ll be back.

So, where should you go when visiting Australia?

Check out this guide to learn about the best places to visit in Australia.

1. Kakadu National Park

Occupied by Aboriginals for over 40,000 years, Kakadu National Park is the best place to go in Australia for a healthy dose of nature and lush greenery.

The park is massive with a diverse number of ecosystems. One moment you may find yourself hiking in the desert sand, while the next you may find yourself gliding through some waterfalls amongst dense trees.

And, not only is Kakadu a great place to experience nature, but it’s also a great place to experience the culture. In fact, you can find some of the world’s oldest rock art in this national park!

2. Sydney

No trip to Australia would be complete without a visit to its largest city- Sydney.

One could easily spend their whole vacation wandering the streets of Sydney and not get bored. But, seeing as you probably don’t have endless amounts of time, here are some of the top highlights the city offers:

  • The Sydney Opera House
  • Bondi Beach
  • Darling Harbour
  • Sydney Harbour Bridge
  • Royal Botanic Gardens
  • Hyde Park
  • Queen Victoria Building
  • Sydney Fish Market

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the huge metropolis that is Sydney, it can help to take a guided tour. You can learn more about these here.

3. Melbourne

Melbourne is the second-largest city in Australia, and just like Sydney, it offers some top-rate attractions.

Here’s what we recommend checking out in Melbourne:

  • Queen Victoria Market
  • Federation Square
  • Check out the amazing street art and laneways
  • Flinders Street Station
  • Royal Botanic Gardens
  • Shop til you drop (Melbourne is renowned for its world-class shopping)

4. Great Barrier Reef

If you think you’ve experienced some breathtaking seascapes before, just wait until you get to the Great Barrier Reef.

For those who don’t know, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral system on the planet. It stretches over 2,300 kilometers in total, and over 900 islands dot the entire ecosystem.

In order to get up close and personal with the marine life that resides in the reef, we recommend either scuba diving or snorkeling. You can also rent kayaks, take a boat trip, or even take a helicopter ride.

5. Cairns

If you’re looking for a tropical getaway during your visit to Australia, Cairns is definitely the place to go.

While the city itself is nothing to write home about, its outskirts offer rainforests and turquoise waters that will leave you breathless.

Plus, it’s a great stop on the way to Daintree National Park or the Wet Tropics of Queensland.
