5 Islands in Florida That Are Definitely Worth Visiting

When you think about Florida you might think Disney World or Universal Studios. With their packed themed parks and cramped stores. Or maybe luscious resorts, and warm sandy beaches with $20 margaritas.

But have you ever thought about exploring Florida beyond the typical stops? Florida’s shores are chocked full of smaller and mesmerizing islands full of serene beauty.

1. Sanibel Island

Sitting on the Gulf Coast this gorgeous island has something for everyone. This island is perfect for the vacationing family or lone traveler.

The beaches of Sanibel Island are full of shells and even some sand dollars. Making it the perfect place to add to find a souvenir.

These beaches are also typically less crowded than other popular spots in Florida. Giving you the perfect opportunity to just take in the peaceful beauty.

2. Gasparilla Island

This quaint little island features a state park with a lighthouse and a view! Visitors can often catch a glimpse at manatees passing by or playful dolphins near the shore.

The super-soft sand makes for an excellent place for kids to play. Or for the adults to relax.

Boca Grande is a small fishing village and another great spot for taking in the local life. It features fun shops and amazing restaurants. You can easily travel by bicycle in this small village.

3. Crab Island

This crab-shaped sandbar is also a great place to spot actual crabs. This little island is only reachable by sea, so you’ll need to take either a kayak or a boat to get there.

This island has been gaining popularity with the party crowd recently so there is a bit of a crowd some days. But you can easily find a vendor on the island for anything you may need from a burger to sunblock while you’re there.

4. Cedar Key

This charming island is about an hour from Gainesville. This little island is packed with historic shops, and many are sitting on stilts above the Gulf Coast. If you’re looking for somewhere to spend all day look here.

If that isn’t enough to tempt you, this island is also home to the Cedar Key Wildlife Refuge. Featuring trees that are over 100 years old, and amazing wildlife.

5. Pine Island

This beautiful island is an outdoorsmen’s dream. It can offer everything from fishing to hiking. There is not a very dense population here, and there aren’t very many busy streets or crowded shops just you and nature.

There are a few eclectic art communities on the island that offer small shops, and restaurants. There’s even a park that features a lush pine forest (hence its name). This beautiful island will leave you wanting more.
