3 Hotel Safety Tips You Should Observe When on Vacation

There are over 15 million hotel rooms available in the United States. And of those, the average occupancy rate is around 62%.

Americans love to travel, whether it be for business or travel.

When you’re out on vacation, the lasting thing on your mind is an accident, but it can happen. Be sure to practice these hotel safety tips.

1. Request a Room Above Ground Level

One of the best tips for how to stay safe in hotels is to request a room above ground level.

Rooms that are on the ground floor, or even the second-floor, are easily accessible through their windows. If you are traveling to a warm location, it’s easy to forget and leave your window open to let in a nice breeze. This leaves your belongings and valuables protected by only a thin screen.

Not only will you get a safer room by going this route, but you’ll also get a better view of the area surrounding your hotel.

2. Always Lock Your Door

With hotel stays, many people feel safe because any intruder would need a room key to open the door. But, technology fails and hotel staff isn’t immune to bad decisions.

To ensure your safety, you’ll want to make sure you always lock the door with the provided deadbolt. When you leave the room, place the “do not disturb” placard on your door handle to signify that you don’t want anyone inside.

In addition, never leave your room key unattended. If you do lose your room key, make sure that you notify the hotel staff so that they can create a new one.

3. Be Careful in High-Travel Areas

Hotels can hold a lot of people at once, especially during weekends or travel seasons. Safety in hotels can come in jeopardy when many people are in high-traffic areas at the same time.

Too many people in a stairway can lead to tripping and falling. Children running from the pool area through the lobby can lead to slippery floors. Dimly lit hallways can make it hard to see belongings left in front of rooms by careless travelers.

Make sure to walk with caution in any high-traffic areas to protect yourself and your family. If you do find yourself injured due to a hotel incident, read more about what to do with this article.

Practice These Hotel Safety Tips

Using these hotel safety tips, you can have a more enjoyable trip knowing you’re better prepared for the unexpected.

Start your stay by requesting a room above ground level so that your room is inaccessible through the windows. When you get to your room, make sure you always lock the door and keep your room key nearby. Don’t forget to be careful in high-travel areas, such as stairways or lobby areas.
